Alex’s Journey with BCS: More Than Shelter

From three years of rough sleeping to rebuilding life with dignity

*Alex came to S3P@YCKC shelter in January 2025, after having rough sleep for about three years. He came from India to work in the IT sector, eventually granting him his PR citizenship status. He is a very humble, polite, and hardworking person.

Unfortunately, he suffered a stroke which not only caused him his job, but also wiped out all of his savings. The stroke also caused him with a low-level paralysis in his right hand and also made him walk with a limp.

This resulted in him not being able to continue to pay for his rental flat, and he was then evicted – rough sleeping in parks, void decks, or any open areas. During his three years of rough sleeping, he had also met people who tried to take advantage of him, or were angry at him for rough sleeping in public spaces and even looked down upon him. However, everything changed when he came to our shelter.

Ever since he came into our shelter, he had been involved in our paid volunteerism program, where he received a small stipend for his work. With the support of his social worker and a case manager from SG Enable, he managed to secure full-time employment. In mid April, *Alex moved to a Transitional Shelter while awaiting his Joint Singles Scheme (JSS) rental flat.

He shared that Bless Community Services gave him more than just a shelter, but also food and everyone treated him well. He described his stay as the best experience he’s had since losing his home, even calling our shelter “the best place in Singapore.” We are glad to support Alex in his most difficult time. We look forward to seeing Alex again at our future events and to the day he can find a permanent place.

We will see Alex again in the near future during our events and look forward to the day when he will have a permanent roof over his head.
